A major advantage of this new technology is the absence of a permanent magnet in the EMA transducers. This negates the strong adhesion of the transducer to the surface of objects made of ferromagnetic steel. The operator is now able to scan the object being inspected in the same manner used with traditional couplant based ultrasonics except...... No Couplant Needed!

Thickness measurement of tubular and plate products without the use of coupling liquid and without pretreatment of the surfaces (removing typical paint coatings or grinding surface corrosion is’t needed).
An innovative technical solution frees the design of the EMA transducer from the strong permanent magnets typically used in other EMA test equipment. They are replaced with pulsed electromagnets. This negates the effect of strong adhesion of the transducer to ferromagnetic materials. This makes scanning feasible since the adhesive forces are not present.
Two types of transverse wave EMA transducers are used (radial or linear polarization).
Thickness measurement of metal objects through corrosion or paint coatings of up to 60 mils in thickness can be achieved. The instrument A-scan screen displays a thickness value of the metal object without measuring the coating if the coating thickness is < 60 mils and thickness value of the object being inspected is under .75”
The instrument can be used with traditional permanent magnet transducers S7392 and S7394 by connecting a special adapter to the instrument. These also allow for high temperature inspection.
Ultrasonic thickness measurement of the material can be performed without contacting the material surface by utilizing fixtures to mount the transducer.
The small aperture of the EMA transducer (.315") allows for the inspection of the small-diameter pipes (down to .75” OD)
B-Scan mode allows the operator to visually display a cross section of the material under examination.
